All-electric booth and tailored offerings for China: Audi at Auto Shanghai 2023

At Auto Shanghai 2023, Audi and its two joint-venture partners – First Automotive Works (FAW) and SAIC Motor - showcase their product portfolio for China on a joint booth. Sustainable premium mobility is taking center stage with a lineup of all-electric Audi vehicles. The Formula 1 show car featuring the four rings’ signature livery as well as the Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept and the Audi urbansphere concept are displayed publicly in China for the first time. At the motor show, Audi underlines its approach to the Chinese market: With products designed and made “in China for China” as well as a dedicated ecosystem, Audi intends to reshape its business in the country.

Audi expands development in China with new R&D center in Beijing

Audi is strengthening its development capabilities in China with a significant broadening of its R&D scope in the region and an expansion of its local Audi China R&D team. The move to the new Audi China Building, opening nearly 10 years after its predecessor, is also a significant milestone in Audi’s more than three-decade long history in China. The new Audi China Building supports the Four Rings’ efforts to establish additional research and production capacities in the country. The state-of-the-art R&D facility will serve as a key innovation hub for the next generation of Audi technologies.

Cornerstone laid in Changchun: Audi FAW NEV Company builds smart factory for e-models

With the foundation of the Audi FAW NEV Company, Audi has set the course for made-in-China production of models based on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) technology platform for the Chinese market. Work has now begun on the new production site in the northern Chinese metropolis of Changchun. With construction set to finish by the end of 2024, this will be the first automotive plant in China where only all-electric Audi models roll off the line. The factory is designed to produce more than 150,000 vehicles a year. All site processes will be networked, with Audi’s “Mission Zero” environmental program setting the guardrails for sustainable production.

New production site for electric models in China: Audi achieves milestone

Audi is consistently focusing on the electrification of its model range in China as well. With the Audi FAW NEV Company Ltd., Audi is setting the course for expanding the local e-product portfolio, building a new plant for fully electric Audi models using the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). In recent months, the company jointly founded by Audi and its partner FAW has achieved a new milestone: After intense preparations and successful approval by the Chinese authorities, construction is set to begin on the new plant in Changchun. The site has a production capacity of more than 150,000 electric cars annually – moreover, production will be CO2 neutral and fully connected.

SAIC Audi opens the world’s largest Audi store in Shanghai

Two floors and a total of 2,400 square meters (25,833 square feet): with the House of Progress (HoP) in Shanghai, SAIC Audi opened the biggest store of this kind in the world on January 1, 2022. As part of the dedication, the Chinese partner company presented the entire A7 L family: Along with the Audi A7 L 55 TFSI, which is being shipped starting in January, visitors were also able to experience the new Audi A7 L 45 TFSI and the concept cars Audi skysphere concept and Audi grandsphere concept.

Jürgen Unser is appointed as the new President of Audi China

Audi is making a new appointment to its central leadership function for the Chinese market: Jürgen Unser will take over management of AUDI AG’s China operations in the role of President of Audi China from 1 January 2022. In this function he succeeds Werner Eichhorn, who enters retirement.

Regenerative Design: Audi at Design Shanghai 2021 in cooperation with Stella McCartney

In 2021 Audi is once again represented at Design Shanghai as Headline Partner. At this design fair, the Four Rings brand is showing its focus on forward-looking, sustainable solutions. The fair stand impressively demonstrates the use of recycled materials in the Audi e-tron GT quattro as well as in Stella McCartney’s innovative products. The fair takes place from 3 to 6 June 2021 in the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center.

Audi A6 e-tron concept – the next e-volution

Audi is resolutely pushing ahead with its “e-volution” towards electric mobility and will be unveiling the forerunner of an innovative family of fully electric, production cars – the four-door Audi A6 e-tron concept – at the Auto Shanghai 2021 show. A completely new technology architecture, the “Premium Platform Electric,” or PPE for short, will serve as the technology platform for these vehicles in the future. Beginning in late 2022, the first production cars in the C- and later also B-segment will be relaunched with PPE technology, including – a first in the market for electric vehicles – both SUVs with a high ground clearance and dynamically styled models with a lower ride height, such as the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron.

Four world premieres and PPE technology – Audi at Auto Shanghai 2021

For the first time the presentation of AUDI AG at Auto Shanghai 2021 is taking place with two partners at a shared trade-fair stand. Audi and its Chinese partner companies FAW and SAIC are showing no fewer than four world premieres: the brand-new Audi A6 e-tron concept vehicle and the all-round updated Audi Q5L, in addition the Audi A7L and an SUV study, still kept beneath a cover, named Audi concept Shanghai – the first two products made by a new partner, SAIC Audi.

Change of Plant Manager at Audi Neckarsulm: Helmut Stettner moves to China, successor Fred Schulze returns from China

After five years as Plant Manager at the Audi site in Neckarsulm, from 1 May 2021 Helmut Stettner will take on new duties in China, where he will be CEO of the PPE Company, newly founded by Audi and FAW. In this new function he will be responsible for setting up the company with its production plant in Changchun, which he will subsequently lead. From 2024 onwards, e-models for the Chinese market will be produced there, based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) developed in cooperation with Porsche. In August 2020 Stettner already took over the establishment of the new company in China as its acting manager and guided this project in addition to his responsibilities in Neckarsulm. As Stettner’s successor, Fred Schulze will return to Neckarsulm. Since 2018 Schulze has been Executive Vice President for Production and Product Management at SAIC Volkswagen in Shanghai – a joint venture between China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. and Volkswagen AG.

At Auto Shanghai 2023, the largest automotive tradeshow in China, Audi will be appearing at a joint booth together with its local partners First Automotive Works (FAW) and SAIC Motor. There, in line with the brand's commitment to sustainability and local market trends, visitors will be greeted by a selection of exclusively all-electric Audi vehicles. The F1 show with Audi launch livery as well as the Audi A6 e-torn Avant concept and the Audi urbansphere concept - all displayed publicly in China for the first time - are further highlights. Thus, the brand’s exhibits at the motor show stand for Audi’s China approach: It is characterized by products and services developed ‘in China for China’ as well as a holistic ecosystem.
The history of Audi in China goes back a long way: the company has had a presence there now for over 30 years. In 1991, it began its partnership with the Chinese automaker First Automotive Works (FAW). As such, Audi was the first foreign premium manufacturer in the market and also the first to adapt its product portfolio to the specific needs of Chinese customers, such as by offering Audi models with extended wheelbases.
Sustainability is a major priority for Audi in China. As part of the Volkswagen Group, the company is continuously improving its energy efficiency in China by expanding the use of renewable energy in its manufacturing facilities and reducing emissions throughout the value chain by various means
1988: On August 13, AUDI AG and First Automotive Works (FAW) sign the agreements for the manufacture under license of the Audi 100 in Changchun. Start of assembly of Audi 100 from imported parts kits at FAW plant and building up of customer service.
