Pirelli World Challenge 2017

Audi Sport has been active in international GT3 racing since 2009 and is ranking among the global players in this growth market. Audi Sport customer racing is responsible for the brand’s customer racing program. It is firmly rooted on four continents, has won dozens of international titles and long achieved three-digit production figures. Audi Sport has produced more than 200 R8 LMS cars to date. The Audi RS 3 LMS has been meeting with tremendous response by customers in TCR touring car racing and the new Audi R8 LMS GT4 perfectly fills the gap in between.

    Fans of the 24 Hours of Spa saw one of the most exciting ever editions of the endurance classic. Audi was among the small group of favorites as the race entered its final quarter, but ultimately it was lady luck that decided the outcome. Four brands fought for victory in the closing stages, before a tire failure robbed Audi Sport Team Phoenix of any chance of victory. In the end, Audi Sport Team WRT from Belgium staged a strong fightback to grab a trophy for Audi. Nico Müller (CH), René Rast (D) and Laurens Vanthoor (B) finished third, while Audi won the “Coupe du Roi” manufacturers’ classification.

In one of Audi Sport customer racing’s most important markets, the sports car is supposed to continue its string of success in endurance racing. Following victories in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and the Sepang 12 Hours last year, the GT3 sports car won the Dubai 24 Hours two weeks ago and the GTD class of the Daytona 24 Hours yesterday as well.     The new Audi R8 LMS instantly won its first major endurance race – the Nürburgring 24 Hours – in May. Now the GT3 sports car will be battling for victory in the season’s most important sprint race in the streets of Macau. At the same time, this marks the Asian premiere of the Audi R8 LMS from November 19 to 22. The International Automobile Federation has awarded ‘FIA GT World Cup’ status to this city street race for the first time. Starting in 2016, Audi will be fielding the new race car in the Asia-wide Audi R8 LMS Cup.

Following the first victory for an Audi at Daytona two years ago, and a second place last season, the two customer teams Flying Lizard Motorsports and Paul Miller Racing will fight for class honors on 24 and 25 January.
