Two completely different vehicle concepts, one result: driving fun at the highest level. Both the R8 Coupé V10 GT RWD and the RS 3 performance edition offer the potential for drifting thanks to special modes. While the V10 engine in the high-performance R8 sports car only powers the rear wheels, the five-cylinder engine in the compact RS 3 sends its power to all four wheels thanks to a quattro system. Lap record on the Nordschleife: Audi RS 3 fastest in the compact class

With a time of 7:40.748 minutes, the new Audi RS 3 Seda is the fastest compact model on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In June, Audi Sport racing and development driver Frank Stippler beat the previous lap record in that class by 4.64 seconds. Above all, the torque splitter, with its fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle, contributed to the record time – Vorsprung durch Technik.

A matter of lateral: the torque splitter in the new Audi RS 3

The new Audi RS 3 represents the epitome of unadulterated driving dynamics. This is Audi’s first vehicle to feature the RS Torque Splitter, which distributes drive torque between the rear wheels in a fully variable manner. In combination with the 400 PS five-cylinder engine, the compact sports car is supremely agile. The 2.5 TFSI now unleashes 500 Nm of torque, 20 Nm more than in the previous model. The Audi RS 3 sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph) – record numbers in the segment.

“A quantum leap for agile driving”: the RS Torque Splitter

“A quantum leap for agile driving” – that’s what racing and development driver Frank Stippler had to say about the torque splitter with its fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle. Audi will soon launch the first-ever series roll-out of this technology in a sporty compact-class RS model. Frank Stippler and Meic Diessner, development and test engineer for chassis, spoke in an interview about the development and tuning process for the torque splitter in the RS 3 prototype. Both worked together throughout the entire development in various testing and set-up cycles on the North Loop of the Nürburgring to ensure that the new technology meets the wishes of sporty drivers on the racetrack as well as customers looking for comfort in day-to-day driving. That also included two self-contained continual runs of 8,000 kilometers each.
