Edoardo Mortara best Audi driver
As the best Audi driver, Edoardo Mortara in the Castrol EDGE Audi RS 5 DTM of Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline secured position five on the grid for the first of the two DTM races at the Nürburgring (Saturday, 13.25 CEST/live on ‘Das Erste’).
In clearly cooler conditions than the day before and track temperatures that were only in the low double-digit range, the drivers were obviously struggling to get their tires to work optimally. Accidents by Paul Di Resta (Mercedes) and Adrien Tambay (Audi) caused an interruption of the 20-minute qualifying session.
The fastest times were set after the restart. For a short time, Mike Rockenfeller in the Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM advanced to the front of the field but in the end dropped to position eight. He was merely 174 thousandths of a second short of the top spot on the grid.
Edoardo Mortara on his last lap improved to 1m 22.068s, which meant position five. With Jamie Green (Hoffmann Group Audi RS 5 DTM) in seventh place and Miguel Molina (Teufel Audi RS 5 DTM) in tenth, four Audi drivers made it into the top ten.
The runner-up in the standings, Mattias Ekström in the Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM, had to settle for grid position 17.
