40 years, 40 figures, 40 images: fascinating facts and tales about Audi’s quattro technology
This technical animation shows the function of the plug-in hybrid drive of the new Audi Q8 TFSI e quattro. At the heart of the plug-in hybrid is a three-liter six-cylinder Otto engine with 250 kW (340 PS) of output, a compact electric motor (PSM) with a maximum output of 130 kW and 460 Nm of torque, and a new, more powerful, liquid-cooled lithium battery located under the floor of the trunk.
At the 1995 International Motor Show, quattro GmbH presented the first customized Audi models, including the Audi A8 and the Audi Cabriolet. The following year, quattro GmbH was officially registered as a car manufacturer – the first in-house model was the Audi S6 plus. Today, the initial handful of people has grown into a team of around 1,500 dedicated employees. In 2020, series production, vehicle customization, Audi exclusive, and all Audi motorsport activities were brought together under Audi Sport GmbH. In this challenging market, Audi Sport GmbH once again achieved excellent sales figures in 2023 and is the first manufacturer to win an overall victory in one of the toughest rallies in the world, the legendary Dakar Rally. All this was made possible by the Audi Sport GmbH team repeatedly daring to do new things while at the same time remaining true to their intrinsic character. Going forward, the sporty Audi subsidiary is pursuing a clear and systematic electrification strategy. Their vision: To set standards in the high-performance customer experience and electrification sector – and thus ensure the future of the brand with the four rings’ sporty DNA.
In October of 2023, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Asso di Picche concept first unveiled at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show, the company unveiled a digital design concept for an electric 2+2 coupé that translates the original model into the future. It is called the Italdesign Asso di Picche in Movimento. Climb-E, a door-to-door mobility machine, premiered at CES in Las Vegas at the beginning of the year, went on an international tour throughout 2023. Italdesign’s engineering department, with its competencies in electrics and electronics, as well as in whole vehicle integration, constantly grew in 2023. The number of Audi turn-key projects, called "captain model projects", that place high requirements on the company strongly increased too. This growth is set to boost interest in Italdesign services from other brands of the Volkswagen Group, help optimize development times and costs, and can also open new opportunities for collaboration with other companies. Production in the Preseries Center has also been working on turn-key projects, thus enabling Italdesign to cover the entire project scope. Competence transformation and investment have been focused on ensuring close-to-series production to support preseries phases, delivering fully testable objects. In addition, the company’s skills in the vehicle pre-startup and vehicle startup sectors expanded in 2023 as well. Italdesign continues to strengthen its commitment to initiatives in the field of ESG (environmental, social, governance) through newly established sustainability governance headed by an ESG Committee and a newly appointed ESG officer. Using the double materiality assessment performed in 2023, the company is laying the foundation for its first Corporate Sustainability Report in 2024. Rooted in its social responsibility, Italdesign has successfully concluded several positive impact measures to reflect the company’s commitment to social issues, especially in local communities.
At the Beijing Auto Show 2024, the brand with the four rings is presenting a tailored variant for the Chinese market - the Audi Q6L e-tron.
The electrically powered car will be shown as an exterior model at the spring motor show in the Chinese capital; the series version will then make its public debut in the fourth quarter of 2024. Like other PPE models for the Chinese market, the Audi Q6L e-tron will be locally produced in a new factory in Changchun. The first deliveries to customers will take place in 2025. The Audi Q6L e-tron is defined by impressive driving and charging performance, excellent efficiency, and an even greater range than the global model. The wheelbase, longer by 105 millimeters, also allows the installation of a larger battery. With it, CLTC ranges of more than 700 kilometers will be possible. The letter “L” in the name signals the long wheelbase, which is also becoming the hallmark of outstanding long-distance capability. Audi has been building “L” models with an extended wheelbase for the Chinese market for decades. The A6L and A4L are the best-known large-volume versions, alongside the Q5L, A8L, and A8L Horch. Now, Audi is adding the L model to the Q6 e-tron family - providing even more space, comfort, and everyday usability. Together with the new interior design philosophy, the Q6L e-tron is creating a very exclusive and generous space for passengers in the market. The Audi Q6L e-tron epitomizes Audi’s distinctive SUV design with consistently further developed e-tron-specific design language. The Audi Q6L e-tron differs from the global version, and this becomes apparent from the start. Above all, the redesigned front end, with an evolution of the Audi brand face, sets its own accents for the China-specific version. To accentuate the progressive and unique exterior design of the Q6L e-tron, exclusive colors will be available for this China-specific version. Lilac Grey, shown on the exterior model at the auto show in Beijing, is one of them.

Audi A6 Audi Tradition 8 Anniversary Dates 2024 At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1994, AUDI AG presented the Audi A8, its new model in the premium segment. By unveiling this car, Audi once again demonstrated the company’s capacity for innovation in the field of automotive engineering. After many years of development, it had managed to put the Audi A8 into production with a fully aluminium body. The body was based on the Audi Space Frame (ASF). This was a frame structure for the body on which individual extruded profiles were joined together by die-cast nodes. The engineers incorporated large, load-bearing aluminium panels into the bodywork cell that was created. Along with the welding and adhesive bonding technology, this was also the first time in automotive engineering that self-piercing rivets had been used as connecting elements. The Audi A8 was initially available in the quattro version with a 4.2-litre V8 engine that produced 220 kW/300 hp. Other units with six, eight and twelve cylinders were set to follow as petrol and diesel engines. Audi A8 Years 30 Audi Tradition 9 Anniversary Dates 2024 Market launch of Avant RS2 1994 was the year in which the first customers were able to pick up the high-performance estate car that had been developed in cooperation with Porsche on the basis of the Audi S2 Avant from their Audi dealer; it was first unveiled the year before at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Changes to the engine control unit, turbocharger and intercooler and an optimised exhaust gas system boosted the performance of the 2.2-litre five-cylinder engine up to 232 kW/315 hp. Combined with a close-ratio, six-speed manual gearbox, this guaranteed acceleration up to 100 km/h in just five seconds. The non-limited top speed was 262 km/h. The Avant RS2, which cost almost 100,000 DM, was manufactured from 1994 at Porsche in Zuffenhausen in a production alliance with the Audi factory in Ingolstadt.
