ALMS 2001
Frank Biela in the Infineon Audi R8 #2

During the 2001 season Audi not only impressively underlined the company slogan “Vorsprung durch Technik“ with a double victory at the Le Mans 24 Hour race: In the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) as well, the Infineon Audi R8 drove from success to success. With eight victories from ten rounds Audi successfully defended the ALMS manufacturers´ title. For the second consecutive year, the Team Audi Sport North America secured the team championship, with an Audi driver, Emanuele Pirro, again winning the drivers´ title of the ALMS.

With the direct fuel injection (FSI) Audi successfully introduced a new engine technology, which immediately proved its worth in Le Mans and in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

Both Audi customer teams, Champion and Johansson, who competed with two 2000-spec R8 vehicles, made Audi´s winning streak in the ALMS perfect. At five of the ten races, at least one customer team stood on the podium.
