Audi Tradition - Anniversary Dates 2024
The Audi R8 racing car competed in the prototype class; the decision was made early on to deploy an open-top car. This new development was driven by the Joest Racing team in collaboration with Audi Sport. Between 1999 and 2016, the company from Ingolstadt entered, in order of appearance, the Audi R8, R10 TDI, R15 TDI Plus, R18 and R18 e-tron quattro during 17 starts in the Sarthe department. No brand of car has won as often in Le Mans in such a short space of time as Audi. The Four Rings topped the podium in the world’s most famous endurance race a total of 13 times between 1999 and 2016. Le Mans Years 25 Motorsport Audi Tradition 29 Anniversary Dates 2024 Years 30 Motorsport From 3 December 1993, Audi sold a special edition of the fourth-generation Audi 80 that was limited to just 2,500 cars. The Audi 80 Competition, which was only available as a saloon, had the same front as the Audi S2 with a distinctive spoiler lip and extra air intakes. A bulky aluminium rear spoiler created downforce at the rear of the vehicle; permanent all-wheel drive delivered the power from the 140 hp 16-valve engine to the road without slipping. The road version was used as a homologation model for the Audi 80 Competition that entered the Super Touring Car Cup. In 1994, Emanuele Pirro competed for Audi in his home country Italy and – as support for Frank Biela – also in Germany in the Audi 80 Competition. The ex-Formula 1 driver managed to win the Italian champion ship at the first attempt. In 1995, driving the Audi A4 STW, he onceagain claimed victory in Italy and ultimately also won the German championship in 1996. Visitors to the sports car production facility at Böllinger Höfe in Neckarsulm can see this for themselves: not only are the models of the Audi e-tron GT⁵ and Audi R8 series built on a shared assembly line, the team in the body shop also works simultaneously on the body of the Lamborghini Huracán and the Audi R8 – almost exclusively by hand. The latter model family is set to have a special year in 2023: the new Audi R8 GT,⁶ limited to 333 vehicles, will delight customers worldwide. For the first time, Audi is combining the most powerful configuration of the naturally aspirated V10 engine with rear-wheel drive. At the same time, the R8 GT⁶ is the final edition of the exclusive supercar. Helping customers get to the top The Audi R8 is also the technical basis for most of the successes achieved in customer racing. Audi Sport offers a total of three R8 motorsport models with different performance levels, plus a racing version of the Audi RS 3 Sedan.⁷ All Audi Sport customer racing cars have one thing in common: the Audi Sport DNA. And that is in great demand. In 2022, the customer racing department produced the 300th Audi R8 LMS GT3, bringing the total number of race cars built over the course of 14 years to 750. The year 2022 was also successful on the race track. Never before have Audi Sport customer racing and its teams clinched so many titles and podium positions. “We topped our previous record from the year before by an impressive 11 titles, for a total of 76. Overall, we have claimed 290 individual victories in 806 races, including three at 24-hour races. That’s also a first-class achievement,” analyzes Rolf Michl. History Since 2009, Audi Sport customer racing has been offering race cars that are entered in various racing series worldwide by its customers’ teams. Initially, the focus was on GT3 racing, but now the company’s lineup of four vehicles means its business rests on four pillars.

Since 2007, the top model has been the Audi R8, the first super sports car to feature the four rings. In 2020, the production business, vehicle customisation, Audi exclusive and all motorsport activities of Audi Motorsport were combined under the umbrella of “Audi Sport GmbH”. Audi Tradition 11 Anniversary Dates 2023 When Audi presented the Audi quattro and its permanent all-wheel drive at the Geneva Motor Show in 1980, it triggered a wave of all-wheel-drive vehicles that revolutionised the world of international rallying from 1981 onwards. To maintain its edge over its competitors in the world of rallying for a longer period of time, from the summer of 1982 Audi developed a quattro with a shorter wheelbase and a dual overhead camshaft engine with four valves per cylinder. However, under international sports regulations, to be able to enter a vehicle like this in Rally Group B first you need to build a series with at least 200 units. The Sport quattro was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1983. The “short quattro”, as it was often lovingly referred to, was brimming with high-performance technology. Its 225 kW/ 306 hp made it the most powerful German production car of its day. The development engineers managed to strike the perfect balance between a pure sports car offering breathtaking performance and a reliable road vehicle which could also easily be driven in rush-hour traffic. The body of the Sport quattro was made of aramid and fibreglass-reinforced plastic as well as carbon fibre/ Kevlar composite materials and, due to the small number of units, it was made at the bodywork company Baur in Stuttgart. The corresponding plastic body parts were supplied by the Swiss company Seger + Hoffmann. The first vehicle in the small series of 214 units was built in February 1984.
