Audi Report 2021
This has already been achieved for Audi Brussels and Audi Hungaria, as well as for the production of the Audi e-tron GT ¹ at the Böllinger Höfe production facility in Neckarsulm. But it is also quite clear that decarbonization is not the sole focus. The efficient handling of resources, economical water usage and protection of biodiversity are of at least equal importance. I would like to concentrate on this in particular and am delighted that so much groundwork has already been done in this area that we can now draw on. At Audi Brussels, for instance, our plan is to cease using high- quality drinking water in the future to cover our process water requirements for production. Instead, we will use reprocessed wastewater from the neighboring municipal sewage plant into which our wastewater also flows. This has the potential to reduce the site’s drinking-water consumption by about 80 percent. Audi México has led the way in this regard, by the way, and has already been producing vehicles without any wastewater since 2019. In addition, we will present our own biodiversity index in 2022, which describes the animal and plant biodiversity at our production sites. “ The Four Rings have a clearly defined plan for the future.” In 2030, Audi wants to sell three million vehicles per year. At the same time, combustion-engine vehicles will gradually be replaced by electric models. What do these changes mean for Production and Logistics? Setting this goal sends out a really strong message – both internally and externally. The Four Rings have a clearly defined plan for the future. In view of market forecasts, our attractive product portfolio and our flexible and highly capable team, it’s certainly feasible. The transformation is a long road, but we have already taken important steps.

A number of experts maintain it seems highly likely that what is known as the “Brussels effect” (see bottom left) will see German standards have an impact on international standards. For that reason, a detailed discussion of the German legal situation will follow below. In 2017, the German Road Traffic Act was amended to allow autonomous systems, under certain conditions, to take over activities that were previously the exclusive responsibility of humans. More specifically, this means that Level 3 systems (cf. Fig, p. 13) are in principle allowed to drive the vehicle. However, a dedicated driver must still be present, although they are also allowed to turn their attention away from driving the vehicle. This only applies, however, when the system is active and does not preclude manual intervention being required at short notice. In addition, a new bill from 2021, which came into force on July 28, 2021, has seen the legal framework created to recognize autonomous motor vehicles from Level 4 (cf. Fig, p. 13) in public road traffic in regular operation. While the regulations apply throughout Germany, the law provides for a local restriction to specific operating areas. Within these areas, a large number of different use scenarios should, at least in principle, be possible. They are, however, yet to be conclusively regulated in the bill to ensure maximum flexibility with regard to future technological, ethical and social developments. Thus far, however, private and individual transport has been less defined. It also becomes evident here that the above-mentioned law is only a first step toward more comprehensive regulation. Nonetheless, the experts interviewed see it as a strong starting point that can serve as a positive example for the ongoing legislative process. The German legislators themselves even see their own initiative as a law to bridge the gap.

While in H1 2021, deliveries increased by +38.8% (best half-year in Audi history) compared with the coronavirus-impacted prior-year, in Q3 2021 deliveries to customers went down significantly by -23.8% due to production adjustments in connection with semiconductor supply shortages. Audi showed – considering the semiconductor supply shortages – a strong sales performance in all three key regions.

Audi managed to take the momentum of the strong fourth quarter of 2020 into 2021 and delivered 31.1% more cars to customers than in the coronavirus-impacted prior-year period. A huge portion of the positive development in deliveries in the first quarter is attributable to China. Driven by strong demand, the deliveries to customers in China increased by 83.0%. In the United States, Audi showed significant growth from January to March 2021. Deliveries of Audi brand vehicles increased by 32.6% and thus exceeded the 11.3% growth of the overall car market. The European market was still burdened by restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. Within this challenging market environment, Audi delivered –6.1% fewer cars to customers than in the prior-year period. Due to the attractive product portfolio, deliveries increased throughout all segments in the first three months of the year. Especially the models in the C/D segment* with the Q7, Q8, A6, A7, A8 and Audi e-tron model lines were in high demand by customers.
