A 181 kg nickel-cadmium battery that had a capacity of 8.6 kWh and could be charged rapidly delivered power for the electric drive and demonstrated the feasibility of hybrid vehicles that can travel without producing any exhaust emissions on short journeys. To switch from one operating mode to the other, the car had to stop and be switched over to electric drive with the combustion engine switched off. Years 35 Audi Tradition 11 Anniversary Dates 2024 Audi Turbo-Diesel With Direct Fuel Injection (TDI) After more than thirteen years of development work, Audi engineers managed to adapt the diesel direct injection that had previously been the preserve of HGVs for diesel engines in passenger cars as well. In combination with exhaust turbocharging, they succeeded in creating a low-loss combustion process, which in turn was reflected in extremely efficient fuel consumption. In autumn 1989, the engineers from Ingolstadt unveiled the Audi 100 with the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder TDI engine at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. This saw Audi elevate the use of a diesel engine in a passenger car to a whole new level and sparked a true “diesel revolution”. Years 35 Audi Tradition 12 Anniversary Dates 2024 When Audi presented the Audi quattro with permanent all-wheel drive at the Geneva Motor Show in 1980, it triggered a wave of all-wheel-drive vehicles that revolutionised the world of international rallying from 1981 onwards. To maintain its edge over its rivals in the world of rallying for a longer period of time, from the summer of 1982 Audi in Ingolstadt developed a quattro with a shorter wheelbase and a dual overhead camshaft engine with four valves. The Audi Sport quattro, which was the basis for an uncompromising Group B rally car, appeared at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1983. The “short quattro”, as it was often lovingly referred to, was brimming with high-performance technology.

In the spotlight: product, technology, brand and the China and North America regions “The Audi Agenda is our roadmap for tackling the right topics and getting Audi models on the road now,” explains Gernot Döllner. At its core, the Audi Agenda focuses on what is important to customers: the prod- uct, technology and the brand. While that applies worldwide, the priorities for Europe, China and North America differ. Specific work packages and responsibilities have been defined for each of these fields of action. In the product area, the primary focus in recent months has been on making final adjustments to the Audi Q6 e-tron to satisfy customer requirements. Production started at the end of 2023. Preparations are now underway for the market launch. The next step is to finalize other important new products for 2024: especially the Audi A6 e-tron,² Audi A5² and Audi Q5.² In addition, Audi is continually developing technologies, particularly in the field of electric mobility, so as to act as a pioneer and set the standard when it comes to innovation in electric cars. “We’re building on established Audi strengths, such as design, chassis construction and our quattro all-wheel drive system. But we want to give ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ a broader perspective,” says Döllner. “We’re aiming for a holistic customer experience, from driving dynamics to the digital ecosystem and automated driving. And we want to lead the way in terms of drive efficiency.” To this end, Audi is undergoing a paradigm shift in the development of new models toward “software first” and will in the future offer vehicles that are developed around the software – these are referred to as software-defined vehicles (SDVs). As part of the Audi Agenda, the company is also strengthening the brand. The aim is to make the brand more tangible, approachable and personal for customers.

Surplus heating and cooling energy is channeled into thermal energy storage. A smart Cross-Energy Concept manages the interaction of all technical components. A photovoltaic system on the center’s green roof already provides green electricity. Vehicle safety center The largest building on the incampus site is the new vehicle safety center. It houses, among other things, intersecting run-up lanes for crash tests, a dummy laboratory, a „flying floor“ for side impact tests, a sled track, and a movable 100-ton crash block. Data center Audi‘s new data center is directly adjacent to the vehicle safety center. Housed on a floor covering an area of almost 10,000 square meters, it supports AUDI AG‘s future projects with state-of-the-art hardware and software. Around 800 servers and data cabinets are housed in the IT space boasting 2,400 square meters of space. CARIAD The four structures of the so-called project house northwest of the incampus house are the premises of CARIAD, the software company in the Volkswagen Group. At CARIAD‘s largest site, over 2,000 employees work on developing the digital driving experience, automated driving, tech platforms, and cloud services, among other things.

More and more functions are now being added – for passengers as well. And the pace at which new innovations are being developed is increasing. The latest feature is holoride.² If desired, it transforms every ride in a wide range of Audi models into an action-packed experience for passengers. The beginnings of in-car entertainment go back such a long way that some of the audio carriers and players have almost disappeared by now. Ralf Friese, Audi historian, Audi Tradition Audi Urquattro:¹ It left its mark on the 1980s with its spectacular design. ¹ Vehicle is no longer offered for sale. ² To enjoy the holoride experience, passengers need the “Pioneers’ Pack” starter package and a holoride-capable Audi vehicle from the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, Q8 e-tron model lines (electric power consumption (combined) in kWh/100 km: 24.4–20.1 (WLTP); CO₂ emissions (combined) in g/km: 0*), Audi e-tron, Audi e-tron Sportback and Audi e-tron GT quattro (fuel consumption (combined) in kWh/100 km: 21.6–19.6 (WLTP); CO₂ emissions (combined) in g/ km: 0*). The prerequisite is the 2023 model year and the third-generation modular infotainment matrix (MIB 3). * Information on fuel/electric power consumption and CO₂ emissions in ranges depends on the vehicle’s selected equipment.

They’re experiences you have to have and feel in order to understand. For me, Holoride is one such thing – and this technology will be available to our customers in selected Audi models before the end of this year. Audi is thus the first manufacturer ever to offer this completely new entertainment experience. Passengers will be able to immerse themselves in games, films and interactive content with the aid of a virtual reality headset. The highlight: The virtual content adapts to the movements of the vehicle in real time. Every turn and every acceleration or braking action has an impact on the perception. The car thus becomes an experience platform. What I find particularly exciting is that a new marketplace for digital content is taking shape here. The content is not only captivating, but also closely interwoven with the car. Holoride is an example of how we at Audi use our connected vehicles and vehicle data to lay the foundations for digital business models in collaboration with our partners – thus creating completely new customer experiences.” “ The car is becoming an entertainment platform” Jakob Wulf, Audi Product Marketing Holoride “Can refueling be more than a tiresome necessity? Yes! Since December 2021, the first Audi Charging Hub has been demonstrating our vision of an electric charging station of the future for premium customers to cover peak charging needs or to replace the home charging terminal in urban areas.

Data – Balancing performance and protection: What opportunities can connectivity and data collection offer autonomous driving and how can we overcome data protection obstacles? Study Outline The experts chosen to participate in the study are opinion leaders from academia, business and politics with a high level of expertise in the field of autonomous driving. Across a series of hour-long interviews, they were given an opportunity to draw a picture of the future of mobility in the year 2030 and to express their views and visions on the present and future of autonomous driving. The interviews were additionally enriched with hypotheses from public discourse and statements from the other experts. For the purposes of this study, the term autonomous driving broadly serves as a synonym for SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Levels 3–5 (see Fig. 1.3). 8 Richard Goebelt Member of the Executive Board & Director – Automotive & Mobility, Association of Technical Inspection Agencies (VdTÜV) Deborah Hersman Former Chairman & Board Member, U.S. National Transportation Safety Board Ex-Waymo, Ex-Velodyne Lidar Dr. jur.
