GT racing

Since 2009, Audi has firmly established itself in the growth market of international GT3 racing – on a sporting level, the brand is credited with 28 championship victories, and with 136 race cars delivered the program is a commercial success. At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Audi unveiled a fundamentally new R8 LMS, which sets new benchmarks in the aerodynamics, lightweight design and safety areas.

    The new Audi R8 LMS instantly won its first major endurance race – the Nürburgring 24 Hours – in May. At the same time, this marks the Asian premiere of the Audi R8 LMS from November 19 to 22. The International Automobile Federation has awarded ‘FIA GT World Cup’ status to this city street race for the first time. Starting in 2016, Audi will be fielding the new race car in the Asia-wide Audi R8 LMS Cup.

    Audi celebrated the next podium successes of the new Audi R8 LMS at Spa.     The new Audi R8 LMS has passed its initial ‘field assessment’ in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. With a gap of only 1.6 seconds, Pierre Kaffer (D) for Audi Sport Team WRT achieved fifth place in the individual time trials of the top-30 qualifying session. His team-mate Nico Müller (CH) trailed him by merely 0.379 seconds on the 25.378-kilometer Nordschleife. Audi Sport Team Phoenix completed the results in positions nine and ten.

    Season opener for Audi racing series in Asia with numerous innovations

    The Audi R8 LMS Cup is starting its fourth season at Zhuhai, South China, on the opening weekend of March 21–22. Audi’s Asia-wide one-make cup will be offering numerous innovations to fans and drivers in 2015. The aerodynamics of the Cup car has been improved and the series will now be featuring standing starts with launch control and a new qualifying format with subsequent single timed laps, plus an equivalence system to balance differences in the drivers’ body weight.     Audi R8 LMS ultra wins ADAC GT Masters

    René Rast (D) and Kelvin van der Linde (RSA) have won the ADAC GT Masters 2014 in the finale at Hockenheim. As a result, Audi celebrates winning its second championship title within 14 days with the Audi R8 LMS ultra, after the production based GT3 racecar had already scooped the Blancpain Endurance Series title. Furthermore, Prosperia C. Abt Racing won, like last year, the team classification in the ADAC GT Masters.

    Laurens Vanthoor wins title in Blancpain Endurance Series for Audi

    Laurens Vanthoor in the Audi R8 LMS ultra won the driver title in the Blancpain Endurance Series (BES) for Audi Sport customer racing. In the season finale, the Nürburgring 1000, the mere 23-year-old Belgian together with Christopher Mies and César Ramos was victorious in difficult conditions. In addition, the 33 points awarded for the victory at the Nürburgring earned the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT the team title in the prestigious endurance racing series. With that, the driver and team titles have gone to Audi for the third time in the Blancpain Endurance Series that has existed since 2011.

    Blancpain Endurance Series season finale full of highlights for Audi sport customer racing

    In GT racing, Audi will be celebrating the finale of the Blancpain Endurance Series on September 21 with several attractions. The 1,000-kilometer race on the Nürburgring will not only be about the decision between the four Audi drivers at the top of the standings and their immediate rivals. In the closing event of the season, the Swiss Ski World Cup winner Didier Cuche will also be celebrating his debut in the Audi R8 LMS ultra. At the same time, Audi will be looking at a four-digit number of racing commitments of the successful customer sport program in the Eifel.

    Third Audi victory in Spa 24 Hours

    Audi has won the world’s toughest GT3 race at Spa. In the battle of eleven marques and 60 participants, the R8 LMS ultra prevailed for the third time in four years in the classic race in the Ardennes that celebrated its 90th anniversary this year. The Belgian Audi Club Team WRT took victory in its home round with the driver trio Laurens Vanthoor/René Rast/Markus Winkelhock (B/D/D). Rast and Winkelhock had previously achieved victory with Audi at the Nürburgring together with two other team-mates.

    The Belgian Audi Club Team WRT has achieved a perfect starting base for the Spa 24 Hours. The #1 Audi R8 LMS ultra will be starting the race from position one on the grid on the 90th anniversary of the endurance event. In the super pole qualifying session for the top 20 participants, the Belgian team, with the Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, achieved the best time in its home round.

    Second 24-hour race victory for Audi within seven days

    Audi has won the Nürburgring 24 Hours exactly one week following the brand’s 13th success in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Phoenix Racing with the Audi R8 LMS ultra celebrated a hard-fought victory in its home round in the Eifel. Ernst Moser’s squad had previously taken the honors in the race through the ‘Green Hell’ with Audi’s GT3 sports car in 2012. With 159 laps the R8 LMS ultra set a new distance record this year. For the first time ever, a Nürburgring winner covered more than 4,000 kilometers – the successful Audi squad completing exactly 4,035.102 kilometers.

    At the Spa 24 Hours, the Audi customer teams had set their sights on the aim of battling for the third victory in succession at the most important GT3 endurance race. In the end, third place was achieved. The current regulations drastically slowed the Audi R8 LMS which, with a tally of 18 titles, has been very successful. As early as in qualifying, grid positions 20, 27, 30, 31, 32, 35 and 53 made this clearly evident. Even Audi’s top driver team had no chance.
