Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH
Rolf Michl has been Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH since September 2022. Born in Oberstdorf, Germany, in 1978, Michl graduated with a degree in business administration from Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg, Germany, in 2006. In 2007, the Allgäu native joined AUDI AG and, after holding positions in the German and Italian markets, took on a new role in product management at quattro GmbH in 2011. In his role of project manager for the Audi Sport TT Cup, he established the brand’s first racing series in Germany starting in 2014. In the process, he and his team implemented a targeted development program for international young talent. As Head of Global Product Marketing at Audi Sport, Michl then determined the global marketing profile of the R and RS models as the sporty spearhead of the model range. After a two-year stint at ABT Sportsline GmbH, the businessman returned to Audi Sport GmbH in 2019 as Director of Sales and Marketing. This phase saw the biggest product initiative, including a doubling of sales and record earnings, and the unveiling of the first all-electric Gran Turismo Audi RS e-tron GT. Michl’s work as part of a global team intensified again in 2022. After holding the position of Chief Operating Officer of Audi Sport, he became part of the management team at Audi Sport GmbH. In 2023 and 2024, Michl also served as Head of Audi Motorsport. During this time, he led the Audi Sport Team QMS to its first overall victory with a prototype featuring an alternative drive concept consisting of an electric motor and energy converter at the legendary Dakar Rally. As part of Audi AG’s transformation, Audi Sport GmbH is also being restructured. Michl has been sole Managing Director of the wholly owned subsidiary since September 1, 2025.

Race of Champions 2023: Audi RS Q e-tron vs. Audi Sport quattro S1
The successful Audi motorsport history on 208 pages Three decades marked by technical innovations Available from mid-April in German and English
Motorsport has always been a means for Audi to develop forward-thinking and efficient technologies which are relevant to customers as well. For 30 years, Audi Sport has been making history in the world of motorsport. Now a fascinating book presents this history to readers: “30 Years of Audi Sport – 30 Years of quattro” will be available from mid-April in German and English.
It is no coincidence that Audi Sport and the quattro celebrate a common anniversary in 2010: in 1980, the first Audiquattro marked the beginning of the successful motorsport history of the brand with the four rings which author Alexander von Wegner describes in detail in the 208-page volume. His research took him into the depths of the Audi archive. In addition, he interviewed all of the former top managers of Audi Sport and many well-known driver personalities from all of the different eras. The current Head of Audi Motorsport, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, has contributed extensive information as well. The work represents the first comprehensive appraisal of Audi Sport’s history. Each era is analyzed and illustrated by a total of 400 mostly colored pictures some of which have not been published before – including a unique historic document that shows the first twelve employees of Audi Sport in front of the former supermarket on the (then) Ringlerstrasse in Ingolstadt which is still home to the Audi Sport department today. All of the race vehicles were developed there – from the original quattro that was later renamed into “R1” all the way to the current Audi R8 LMS that bears the internal project name “R16.” All vehicles are depicted in detailed, large-sized graphical representations and schematic drawings that bring back memories of Audi Sport’s most spectacular inventions.
World premiere in Munich: the new Audi R18 e-tronquattro Four-wheel driven diesel hybrid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans Audi ultra lightweight as base for the application of hybrid technology
Motor sport is used yet again by AUDI AG to pioneer new technology: the brand with the four ring’s new Le Mans race car is the world’s first LMP1 car to combine a highly-efficient TDI with a hybrid system. quattro drive also celebrates its comeback to the race track with the prototype – in a entirely new form.
Audi R18 e-tronquattro is the name of the new Le Mans prototype that makes its race debut on May 5 in the 6-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) and fights for overall victory at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans (France) on June 16/17. Audi unites two technologies in a fascinating way to create a new type of drive, which is also already being tested for future use in production cars: e-tronquattro. Hiding behind this description is the next generation four-wheel drive with which Audi combines the advantages of the proven quattro drive with the potential of electromobility. To this end one vehicle axle is powered conventionally, the second by electric motors. “Audi has always consciously selected championships and categories in racing that have a close relationship to production and therefore have technical relevance for the Audi customers,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, who personally drove the new Audi R18 e-tronquattro onto the stage on Wednesday evening during its world premiere in the Audi Training Center at Munich airport – electrically and almost silent. “quattro, TFSI and TDI are three excellent examples of how motorsport has stimulated production development. A similar tendency is apparent with the e-tronquattro: we test a completely new technology on the race track before it’s introduced to the Audi production line.” On the Audi R18 e-tronquattro kinetic energy is recovered on the front axle during the braking phase.
Fledgling project is being showcased at four European classic car events New racing series boosts demand for Audi’s DTM models Further deliveries of Le Mans sports prototypes are planned
Since 2025, Audi Sport racing legends has been attracting considerable attention in the most discerning segment of the classic car market. A year ago, the brand began selling exclusive factory motorsport models from its former DTM and sports prototype programs. A high-profile international community of enthusiasts has responded enthusiastically to the range on offer. This season, Audi Sport racing legends is expanding its presence on the classic car scene to four international events across three countries and is preparing further prototypes for sale.
“Demand for our racing cars is exceeding our expectations and is currently even leading to delivery delays,” says Rolf Michl, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. “This proves that we have struck a chord with the spirit of the times and that our brand has a strong appeal. In our very first year, we have already succeeded in selling three rare DTM Class 1 racing cars and an LMP prototype to selected car enthusiasts.” An Audi R18 e-tronquattro from the LMP1 era, built in 2013, and three AudiRS 5 DTMs from Class 1 have found new owners in less than twelve months. Mechanics and engineers are currently working on further racing cars.
“The new CLASS ONE Revival racing series has given the classic racing scene a real boost this year,” emphasizes Florian Mair, project manager at Audi Sport racing legends. “This category for Class 1 touring cars from 1993 to 2020 is generating strong demand for former DTM racing cars. Customer interest is directed straight at us. That is why we have included three CLASS ONE Revival events in our calendar. At the same time, our Le Mans prototypes are also attracting great admiration from collectors.”
First success for new Audi R18 e-tronquattro Allan McNish celebrates “home” victory with Loïc Duval and Tom Kristensen Second sports car triumph for Audi in the 2013 season
Audi began the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in World Champion’s style. The two Audi R18 e-tronquattro cars dominated the Silverstone 6 Hours and deservingly clinched a one-two victory. For Audi, following the one-two result in the non-championship Sebring 12 Hours in March, this marked the second sports car success this year.
For the first time, Audi won the famous RAC Tourist Trophy. The tradition-steeped trophy that has been awarded since 1905, was the main prize for the 2013 WEC opening event. The Scotsman Allan McNish (GB) was pleased to win this important motorsport trophy at his “home” round. Together with Tom Kristensen (DK) he was on the grid for the first time with his new team-mate Loïc Duval (F). The trio is now leading the WEC drivers’ standings with a seven-point advantage. In the fifth hour of the race, after 151 laps, they took the lead. Despite an excursion while lapping another car and an additional tire change McNish went on to recover the lead and crossed the finish line with a 3.4-second advantage. From the start, a thrilling battle had ensued with challenger Toyota. Allan McNish in the number 2 Audi grabbed the lead for the first time on the sixth lap. The sister car – number 1 – driven by Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer (CH/D/F) completed Audi’s one-two lead at an early stage. On lap 77, the Swiss fought his way forward to the very front. A defect on the left front driveshaft after four hours of racing though meant that the hybrid system of car number 1 was no longer able to deliver its power to the front wheels. With that, the current World Champions had to admit defeat. In the technologically challenging battle of the best hybrid sports cars Audi – like last year – achieved victory in front of Toyota at Silverstone.

Three hybrid race cars at the Le Mans 24 Hours Further development of the Audi R18 e-tronquattro First World Champion with a hybrid sports car
Eleven victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours, ten successes at the Sebring 12 Hours, nine titles in the American Le Mans Series – and now Endurance World Champion as well: No other automobile manufacturer has shaped the sports prototype scene in the last decade the way Audi has. With technical innovations and the further development of hybrid technology, Audi is aiming to defend its lead.
With the Audi R18 e-tronquattro, the brand with the four rings achieved the first triumph of a hybrid race car at the Le Mans 24 Hours. In addition, Audi won the new FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and is thus the first World Champion in history with a hybrid sports car. In 2013, Audi is competing in the World Endurance Championship as the title defender. Audi Sport Team Joest will be fielding two updated Audi R18 e-tronquattro cars, a third R18 e-tronquattro will be running at the Le Mans 24 Hours and the WEC race at Spa. Three hybrid race cars at Le Mans At Le Mans and in the WEC, Audi is thus exclusively banking on hybrid technology that was successfully introduced in 2012. The flywheel energy storage system is becoming even more powerful without any substantial increase in weight and size. Strictly in terms of its exterior, the Audi R18 e-tronquattro will hardly differ from this year’s winning car although numerous technical innovations are again assembled under the vehicle’s ultra-light carbon fiber skin. In a parallel project, Audi Sport is already intensively working on the successor car for the new LMP1 regulations that will come into effect as of 2014. “For Audi Sport, it was a major feat to develop a hybrid race car in a very short period of time and to immediately bring what was a completely new technology for us to success at Le Mans and in the WEC,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.
In March 2016, he became CEO of Quattro GmbH (today Audi Sport GmbH) before joining Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. as President at the beginning of 2018. Winkelmann returned to Lamborghini as Chairman and CEO on December 1, 2020, succeeding Stefano Domenicali. Simultaneously, he held the presidency of Bugatti until October 2021.
