Audi Sport GmbH – formerly quattro GmbH – shapes the sporty, exclusive image of the brand with the four rings. Only the sportiest models bearing the four rings are permitted to use the abbreviations R and RS. In addition to the dynamic models, the company handles customizations through the Audi exclusive program, the Audi collection, and Audi Sport Performance Projects (including customer service for customer racing). Audi Sport GmbH is headed by Rolf Michl, and Audi will enter Formula 1 for the first time in 2026. The independent Audi Formula Racing GmbH was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary of Audi Sport GmbH for this purpose. The subsidiary is responsible for developing and producing the specially designed power unit.

For ten years, Audi has built an allroad variant of the Audi A4 Avant – in its latest version it remains the top all-rounder for on-road and off-road driving. Thanks to its standard quattro all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance, the A4 allroad quattro combines high ride comfort with good off-road qualities. The Audi A4 allroad sets itself apart from the A4 Avant with characteristic details. The bumpers at the front and rear, the wide wheel arch trims and the side sill come in the color structured gray as standard. As an option, Audi can supply them in Manhattan gray or in body color; there are silver inlays for the sills. The underbody protection gleams in silver; while the diffuser insert comes in matt black. An “allroad” logo decorates the tailgate – the raised roof rails completes the robust look. At market launch, the A4 allroad quattro will be available with a 45 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI with 180 kW (245 metric hp) and an S tronic transmission. (Combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 6.8–6.6* (34.6–35.6 US mpg); combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 155–150* (249.4–241.4)). Two further diesel engine variants will follow later. With all of the allroad variants, the engine torque is transferred to all four wheels – but in different ways. While the 45 TFSI uses the seven-speed S tronic and the quattro drive with ultra technology, the two engine variants deploying later will feature the quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Superior performance: As part of the product upgrade, the SQ8 TFSI now runs on the established 4.0 TFSI with 507 PS and 770 Nm of torque with fast-shifting eight-speed tiptronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. For an ideal driving experience, a vehicle requires not only first-class engines, but also outstanding suspension components. Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH
Rolf Michl has been Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH since September 2022. Born in Oberstdorf, Germany, in 1978, Michl graduated with a degree in business administration from Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg, Germany, in 2006. In 2007, the Allgäu native joined AUDI AG and, after holding positions in the German and Italian markets, took on a new role in product management at quattro GmbH in 2011. In his role of project manager for the Audi Sport TT Cup, he established the brand’s first racing series in Germany starting in 2014. In the process, he and his team implemented a targeted development program for international young talent. As Head of Global Product Marketing at Audi Sport, Michl then determined the global marketing profile of the R and RS models as the sporty spearhead of the model range. After a two-year stint at ABT Sportsline GmbH, the businessman returned to Audi Sport GmbH in 2019 as Director of Sales and Marketing. This phase saw the biggest product initiative, including a doubling of sales and record earnings, and the unveiling of the first all-electric Gran Turismo Audi RS e-tron GT. Michl’s work as part of a global team intensified again in 2022. After holding the position of Chief Operating Officer of Audi Sport, he became part of the management team at Audi Sport GmbH. In 2023 and 2024, Michl also served as Head of Audi Motorsport. During this time, he led the Audi Sport Team QMS to its first overall victory with a prototype featuring an alternative drive concept consisting of an electric motor and energy converter at the legendary Dakar Rally. As part of Audi AG’s transformation, Audi Sport GmbH is also being restructured. Michl has been sole Managing Director of the wholly owned subsidiary since September 1, 2025.

Helmut Stettner was born 1960 in Waiblingen in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. After completing a metalworker’s apprenticeship, Helmut Stettner studied mechanical engineering as well as industrial engineering and management. Following several stages of his career including a senior position at AMG GmbH, he moved to quattro GmbH at the Audi Group in 1999. At quattro GmbH, he was Head of Production, where his responsibilities included the start of production of the first generation of the Audi R8 high-performance sports car at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. In 2011, Stettner was made Plant and Production Director at FAW/VW Automotive Co. Ltd. in Changchun, China. From January 2016 to April 2021 Helmut Stettner has been Plant Manager at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. Stettner has been back in China since May 1, 2021, where he is Chief Executive Officer of the Audi FAW NEV Company Ltd. He is responsible for the setting-up of a new production site for fully electric Audi models in Changchun, which he will subsequently lead.

Motorsport has always been a means for Audi to develop forward-thinking and efficient technologies which are relevant to customers as well. For 30 years, Audi Sport has been making history in the world of motorsport. Now a fascinating book presents this history to readers: “30 Years of Audi Sport – 30 Years of quattro” will be available from mid-April in German and English.
It is no coincidence that Audi Sport and the quattro celebrate a common anniversary in 2010: in 1980, the first Audiquattro marked the beginning of the successful motorsport history of the brand with the four rings which author Alexander von Wegner describes in detail in the 208-page volume. His research took him into the depths of the Audi archive. In addition, he interviewed all of the former top managers of Audi Sport and many well-known driver personalities from all of the different eras. The current Head of Audi Motorsport, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, has contributed extensive information as well. The work represents the first comprehensive appraisal of Audi Sport’s history. Each era is analyzed and illustrated by a total of 400 mostly colored pictures some of which have not been published before – including a unique historic document that shows the first twelve employees of Audi Sport in front of the former supermarket on the (then) Ringlerstrasse in Ingolstadt which is still home to the Audi Sport department today. All of the race vehicles were developed there – from the original quattro that was later renamed into “R1” all the way to the current Audi R8 LMS that bears the internal project name “R16.” All vehicles are depicted in detailed, large-sized graphical representations and schematic drawings that bring back memories of Audi Sport’s most spectacular inventions.

Motor sport is used yet again by AUDI AG to pioneer new technology: the brand with the four ring’s new Le Mans race car is the world’s first LMP1 car to combine a highly-efficient TDI with a hybrid system. quattro drive also celebrates its comeback to the race track with the prototype – in a entirely new form.
Audi R18 e-tronquattro is the name of the new Le Mans prototype that makes its race debut on May 5 in the 6-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) and fights for overall victory at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans (France) on June 16/17. Audi unites two technologies in a fascinating way to create a new type of drive, which is also already being tested for future use in production cars: e-tronquattro. Hiding behind this description is the next generation four-wheel drive with which Audi combines the advantages of the proven quattro drive with the potential of electromobility. To this end one vehicle axle is powered conventionally, the second by electric motors. “Audi has always consciously selected championships and categories in racing that have a close relationship to production and therefore have technical relevance for the Audi customers,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, who personally drove the new Audi R18 e-tronquattro onto the stage on Wednesday evening during its world premiere in the Audi Training Center at Munich airport – electrically and almost silent. “quattro, TFSI and TDI are three excellent examples of how motorsport has stimulated production development. A similar tendency is apparent with the e-tronquattro: we test a completely new technology on the race track before it’s introduced to the Audi production line.” On the Audi R18 e-tronquattro kinetic energy is recovered on the front axle during the braking phase.
