50 years of the Audi five-cylinder

Audi will celebrate a very special anniversary in 2026: 50 years of the five-cylinder engine. The brand with the four rings first introduced this engine in 1976 in the second-generation Audi 100. This was followed by upgrades and new developments with turbocharging, exhaust gas purification, and four-valve technology, rally engines, and five-cylinder diesel engines. A winning formula: emotional driving in the Audi RS 3

One year ago, Audi set a lap record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the RS 3, making it the fastest compact car on the 20.832-kilometer racetrack in the Eifel to date. With an optimized chassis setup, semi-slick tires, and 400 PS from the legendary five-cylinder engine, the updated RS 3 was more than seven seconds faster than the pre-facelift version.

Back on track: lap record for Audi Sport in the compact segment

Frank Stippler has set a new lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife with a preproduction model of the RS 3 product upgrade. The Audi Sport racing and development driver clocked an impressive time of 7:33.123 minutes, beating the current fastest lap time in this class by more than five seconds. Further proof that the enhanced top model from the A3 series is once again the fastest compact car.
