Winners - Audi motorsport highlights 2013
Nico Müller visits Audi quattro Cup
Last week, DTM driver Nico Müller visited the German finale of the Audi quattro Cup on the outskirts of Berlin. Together with Johannes Polgar from AUDI AG he presented the trophy to the winners of the golf tournament. The two winning teams prevailed against a total of 260 finalists and will travel to the world finale in Mexico at the end of November. There the overall winners of the Audi quattro Cup that celebrates its 25th season this year will be determined. The five days of the German finale at the Nick Faldo Course were not only centered on the golf ball. Instructed by professional sailors, Audi offered the participants an Audi Sailing Experience on the Scharmützelsee lake as well.
Audi racing drivers thrill fans at GP Ice Race
Daniel Abt, René Rast and Benoît Tréluyer put in a spectacular show in Zell am See Audi e-tron FE06 and Audi RS 5 DTM sideways on ice and snow Rally legend Stig Blomqvist drives historic Audi Sport quattro
Spectacular drifts on ice and snow: at the second running of the GP Ice Race in Austria’s Zell am See, Formula E driver Daniel Abt and DTM champion René Rast tackled slippery terrain with their Audi race cars. The 1984 World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist and triple Le Mans winner Benoît Tréluyer joined the Audi show.
Hildegard Wortmann, member of the Board of Managament responsible for marketing and sales, was present and joined René Rast in the Audi RS 5 DTM as well as Stig Blomqvist in the Audi Sport quattro for several fast laps. “It was an impressive experience,” she said. “It was great to see the enthusiasm of the many fans at the circuit, they were treated to a tremendous show: a unique event that connects the history, the present and the future of motorsport.” After the traditional ice race in Zell am See had celebrated a revival after 45 years last year, Audi racing drivers again treated spectators to an enthralling show. Daniel Abt turned several spectacular laps on snow with his Audi e-tron FE06 from the FIA Formula E and pulled the freestyle ski ace Benedikt Mayr on a rope, in traditional skijoring-style, behind his Formula E racer. “Bene is a professional skier, I drive race cars, so we had the idea to do something together here again,” said Abt. “Over time, this event with exciting racing cars from several marques and eras has turned into a hot spot of the motor racing scene. The drivers spend a great day together, there’s no competition pressure, and we give the fans a great show.”
In difficult conditions around freezing point, the two-time DTM champion René Rast shared driving duties in his Audi RS 5 DTM #33 with Frenchman Benoît Tréluyer.
Female power has a proud tradition at Audi
From Michèle Mouton via Tamara Vidali to Vanina Ickx 24 days until the start of the 2006 DTM
When the new DTM season opens on April 9th, this date will mark the first time in the most popular international touring car series’ history for two females – Audi factory driver Vanina Ickx and Susie Stoddart – to be starting from the grid. At Audi Sport, “female power” has a proud tradition because Vanina Ickx will be following in the footsteps of Michèle Mouton and Tamara Vidali.
Both caused a stir as Audi works drivers and affirmed their place in the male-dominated world of motorsport. When Audi entered the World Rally Championship with the original quattro, Michèle Mouton was the absolute sensation. In 1981 Mouton, who is now 54, was the first ever female to win a WRC round. In 1982 the high-spirited French lady, who was nicknamed “The Volcano,” barely missed clinching the World Championship title. In the late nineties, Tamara Vidali stirred up the male community in Super Touring Car racing. With the Audi A4 quattro, the Italian managed to claim several podium places before fully concentrating on her career as an architect. This year sees Vidali making a comeback in Italy at the wheel of an Audi RS4. Whereas for the 39-year old Italian motorsport today is merely a hobby, Vanina Ickx (31) aims to establish herself in the DTM. At the wheel of the A4 DTM, the Belgian, who is currently watching the debut of the Audi R10 TDI at Sebring (USA), wants to prove that her exploits in sportscar racing were by no means accidental.
Facts and figures on Audi’s DTM title
First title hat-trick in DTM history Seventh DTM title for AUDI AG in total Fourth title for the Audi A4 DTM
Timo Scheider’s title win in the 2009 DTM finale at Hockenheim is tied to numerous conclusive facts and figures about AUDI AG’s touring car racing commitment.
Timo Scheider’s title win marks as much as the seventh DTM exploit of the brand after 1990 (Hans-Joachim Stuck, Audi V8 quattro), 1991 (Frank Biela, Audi V8 quattro), 2002 (Laurent Aiello, Abt-Audi TT-R), 2004 and 2007 (Mattias Ekström, Audi A4 DTM in both years) as well as 2008 (Timo Scheider, Audi A4 DTM). It was Audi’s third title win in a row. A title hat-trick has never before been achieved by an automobile manufacturer in the DTM which has been held since 1984. Audi returned to the DTM with a “factory” commitment in 2004. To date, the brand from Ingolstadt has won four titles during this period, competitor Mercedes-Benz has won two. If the comparison period included Audi’s “factory” commitments in the old DTM (1990 to 1992), Audi’s score on the race track would amount to 6:3 for Audi vs. Mercedes-Benz. Timo Scheider successfully defended his title from last year. Only one driver before him has achieved this feat (Bernd Schneider in 2000/2001). Once across the country at racing speed? On the way to the title Timo Scheider covered exactly 1,796.720 kilometers during the course of 548 race laps in the 2009 season. This equates almost exactly to the distance between his home in Lochau, Austria, on Lake Constance to Kiel on the North Sea coast and back. Timo Scheider was thus the only driver in the 2009 season to finish all 548 race laps. The champion scored points at each of the ten races but was retroactively disclassified at Zandvoort because he showed up late for weighing. At seven of the ten rounds Scheider was on the podium. Timo Scheider also posted the largest number of leading laps of the year (140), followed by Mattias Ekström (103).

Nico Müller visits Audi quattro Ski Cup
Audi driver Nico Müller treated himself to a foray into skiing this weekend. The Swiss DTM race driver took part in the qualifying rounds of the Audi quattro Ski Cup in Verbier in the canton of Wallis. There, amateur skiers, instructed by former world-class skier Fränzi Aufdenblatten and former Alpine Ski World Cup winner Didier Cuche, had the opportunity to optimize their technique and enjoy winter sport in a class of its own. With his win in his age group, the 23-year-old qualified for the world finals of the Audi quattro Ski Cup in St. Moritz from March 18–23.
Audi driver Filipe Albuquerque in eager anticipation of WEC
Portuguese is about to make his debut in the FIA WEC Significant differences to touring car program in the DTM Varied preparation at the beginning of sports car career
Audi factory driver Filipe Albuquerque (Portugal) is facing a major challenge on switching from touring car to endurance racing. The Portuguese will contest his first race in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro diesel hybrid sports car at round two of the WEC at Spa (Belgium) on May 3.
Albuquerque competed for Audi in the DTM for three years and has clinched a class victory in the Daytona 24 Hours in the Audi R8 GRAND-AM GT sports car. Since last winter he has been familiarizing himself with Audi’s third motorsport program. In the pinnacle event of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, the Le Mans 24 Hours, Albuquerque will be sharing the cockpit of the R18 e-tron quattro with Marco Bonanomi (Italy) and Oliver Jarvis (Great Britain). Even before Filipe Albuquerque climbs into his #3 Audi R18 e-tron quattro his new task requires him to focus on different demands. “I changed my fitness training. Now I’m repeating specific exercises more frequently in order to more intensively train my muscles,” says the 28-year-old professional race driver. “The lateral guidance forces are much higher in the LMP race car because we’ve got more downforce and are running with higher cornering speeds. Strong neck muscles and good physical stability are prerequisites for this.” Good body control is also required when getting in and out of the car to ensure impeccable driver changes without loss of time. After climbing into the cockpit, the driver finds himself surrounded by a complex workplace. “I first learned 37 switches and their functions – that’s a lot more than in the DTM cockpit,” he says, drawing a comparison between the cars.
