MQ! Innovation Summit
September 7, 2017
– Check against delivery –
Ladies and gentlemen,
a race has begun… a race about intelligence. A scientist in Atlanta has found out something incredible: She discovered that dolphins might be able to cope with more complexity than we are. We still maintain: We are the clever ones. And the dolphins? They prefer to remain silent. Intelligence is the key to solve the major questions of the future. And that’s why YOU are here! A warm welcome everybody to the MQ! Innovation Summit!
It all started with an apple. And I won’t go back that far to Adam and Eve. Isaac Newton made a stunning finding with an apple. The earth attracts the apple – and the apple the earth. It’s all… about mobility. Today, we have a guest among us who founded the Apple brand together with Steve Jobs: Home of the most successful smartphone and the most fascinating computers. In a couple of minutes, we are looking forward to your keynote, Steve Wozniak.
Wikipedia defines mobility as: “The movement of people, things and ideas”. Exciting! The founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, is with us tomorrow. We are very happy, that so many interesting guests from all around the globe made all the way to Ingolstadt. People from robotics, autonomous driving, transportation, engineering and many more. And we expect lively discussions today and tomorrow – two days jam-packed with impulses, inspiration and networking.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Albert Einstein once said: “It’s important to never stop questioning!” An inspiring attitude and our motto – the hashtag for this event: Never stop questioning! Einstein had an estimated IQ clearly above 160. And in case you were wondering about the title of this summit: MQ is the abbreviation for mobility quotient. The MQ might become a parameter for efficient mobility of an organization or even for the mobility of an individual – through space and time. The MQ! Innovation summit is supposed to be a platform for people like Einstein: Pioneers, visionaries – unconventional thinkers. People, who want to shape the future. People like you!
Einstein revolutionized science. At the same time he influenced the rest of the world. He spoke up for international understanding and peace. He wanted to change the world for the better. Taking responsibility in this world is an aspiration for all of us. And one of these responsibilities is to shape the mobility of the future.
Now, if we were to write down the formula for such a mobility quotient, we would need four variables:
Being mobile means overcoming distances. Or simply: getting from A to B. In times of pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages, the possibilities to get to where you wanted were limited. As a consequence, ideas and cultural identities had a limited, local impact. Today, with ships, trains, cars, airplanes and especially the Internet, you can reach any spot of the world at any time. The world is getting smaller – and at the same time bigger: We have more technological progress and cultural diversity than ever before. Just because space becomes relative.
The second aspect of mobility is TIME:
More than one hundred years of automotive history were all about getting faster from one point to another. Now we all know this is limited by physical law. So meanwhile, our industry is focusing on something just as important: the quality of the time spend on board a car. We want to support our customers in making the best of their time. Especially, as opportunities are increasing: In the future, the driver will more and more become a passenger. Because the cars will take over the steering wheel for piloted driving. This means: The passengers regain more and more time. More personal freedom. You have the choice how to spend this time. And it is our job, to provide you with the right services, smart solutions and usability. Time is so precious. We want to make a gift to everybody… the 25th hour. That extra-time to lean back, to be productive or to spend quality time with your loved ones.
Number three is the SOCIAL ASPECT of mobility.
People gain prosperity through mobility. Access to mobility enables them to take part in commerce, to get a proper education, and to literally expand their horizons. Future mobility itself will be social as well. More and more cars will be connected with the Internet – and by that with each other. This is why we bring every new Audi online. Cars will share their data, form swarm intelligence and work together. This will reduce traffic jams and make mobility safer and more efficient.
That brings me to the fourth ingredient for the MQ: SUSTAINABILITY.
Future mobility has to be in accord with humans, nature and the climate. Without wasting resources, without emissions: CO2-neutral “from cradle to cradle.”
Ladies and gentlemen,
as a premium car manufacturer, those four aspects shape our future products. We use space, time and all other resources with care. We develop drive-trains with zero emissions. We integrate our cars in the Internet of Things. And we bring mobility to the next level: with Artificial Intelligence. By the beginning of the next decade, we will see cars on our streets that drive all by themselves. Autonomous driving will be a game-changer. And Artificial Intelligence is crucial for its breakthrough.
With AI, a car changes its role in our lives. The future car I dream of will be a secretary who reminds me what I need to do – where and when, a butler who gets my groceries, a post box on wheels where couriers can deliver parcels, and maybe it even becomes an empathetic companion throughout my day. Or in brief: a personal avatar.
AI will allow us to make our lives easier. By collecting and interpreting huge amounts of data. And by predicting situations of the future. The new technology offers a historic step in the relationship between man and machine.
Ladies and gentlemen,
this is your chance! – This is our chance! We can write history together! Just like Einstein said: Never stop questioning. Develop new ideas in our workspaces! And while we are discussing who is more intelligent: Dolphins or mankind – computers are taking over. So let’s keep an eye on Artificial Intelligence. Let’s use AI strategically to think outside the box! I wish you an inspiring MQ! Summit. Thank you.
