For the first time since 2005 Audi has managed to achieve a victory in the DTM at the Lausitzring. And Martin Tomczyk has captured the lead of the standings for Audi. Quotes from the Audi camp after the race.
Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport) “It was nice to be able to finish the race today with a one-two victory after the many tough years at Lausitz. The performance was good. The strategy was right. Martin (Tomczyk) drove a fantastic race. Timo (Scheider) has shown that he has regained his strength. For Miguel (Molina) I feel a bit sorry. He was in a very good position as well but then after running over a kerb retired due to a defect in the transmission system. Oliver (Jarvis) drove a very good race too but then unfortunately got caught behind Jamie (Green) and lost a lot of time that way. It was a great overall team performance. It’s still early in the season but the lead in the championship is a nice motivation for the whole squad.”
Martin Tomczyk (Schaeffler Audi A4 DTM), 1st place “That was simply sensational today. Right at the start I made up one place and then soon realized that I could drive very fast times. The overtaking maneuver with Jamie (Green) at the end of the start-finish straight fit in perfectly and then my team helped me get past Bruno (Spengler) with a good strategy and great stops. After that I continued to drive my race with consistently fast times. Winning here with such a large lead and putting an end to Audi’s six-year barren spell here is really special.”
Timo Scheider (AUTO TEST Audi A4 DTM), 2nd place “A great day! Although I’d have wished to advance as much as possible from position nine finishing in second place in view of the highly competitive field in the DTM is anything but normal. As early as in this morning’s warm-up session we realized that our race set-up was very good and that we could drive fast times. In the race though I was stuck behind other cars at first but once the track was clear for me I really took off. The performance of the car and the tires was fantastic. In addition, the strategy was perfect and my team did two superb pit stops. It’s good to experience the feeling of standing on the podium again.”
Oliver Jarvis (Audi Sport performance cars A4 DTM), 5th place “I’m pretty disappointed. In the warm-up this morning we showed that we had a really good pace for the race. But the strategy wasn’t optimal. Before the stops we were in front of Timo (Scheider) but then we must have made a mistake. Otherwise I might have finished on the podium.”
Tom Kristensen (E-POSTBRIEF Audi A4 DTM), 7th place “I really enjoyed the weekend with the guys in the DTM. Seventh place in qualifying, seventh place in the race with a lot of consideration for all team colleagues, two points and ‘Rocky’s’ Audi doesn’t have a single scratch on it – that’s a nice result. In the race I had a good start and perhaps could have moved forward even a bit further. But naturally I stayed clear of all duels because I didn’t want to interfere with the championship. Now my wish is for ‘Rocky’ to return soon and to be able to attack again. In the future I’ll enjoy watching the DTM again on the sofa with my family. And if the fans this weekend are saying that it was a good idea by Dr. Ullrich to let the old Dane drive again then I freely admit: I’m really pleased to hear that!”
Filipe Albuquerque (TV Movie Audi A4 DTM), 8th place “It’s been a good weekend for me. We were running well straight from the start. In the first stint I lost a lot of time behind Mattias Ekström. But after the pit stops the track was clear for me and I was able to set good times. Although it looked like it was easy at the end I had Christian Vietoris behind me and felt a lot of pressure. I scored a point and that’s fantastic for me and the team.”
Mattias Ekström (Red Bull Audi A4 DTM), 11th place “This was not what we wanted. Especially in the first stint I was struggling with way too much oversteer – while braking and in the turns. After the first and second pit stop things were a little bit better but not perfect either. We’ve learned a lot today – but you don’t get points for that.”
Rahel Frey (Glamour Audi A4 DTM), 15th place “We were struggling a bit throughout the weekend. But we said that we wouldn’t give up and would continue to fight all the way to the end. That paid off. In the first and second stint I lost some time. But in the last stint my times were really competitive. We need to continue to work like this in order to advance step by step.”
Miguel Molina (Red Bull Audi A4 DTM), retirement ”The race went well. The car was perfect and fast. The strategy was right too. We were running in sixth place when something broke on the transmission. Of course that was a shame because the car was really quick and easy to drive today. We’ll continue to give everything. At the Norisring we’ll have a new chance.”
Edoardo Mortara (Playboy Audi A4 DTM), retirement “That was another difficult race today. I had some body contact – first with Engel, then with Vietoris. After that my car was no longer okay and we gave up for safety reasons. I’m disappointed – particularly since I’ve had a collision before, in the first turn at Spielberg. But we’re looking ahead.”
Hans-Jürgen Abt (Team Director Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline): “We had to break a spell in order to finally win here after six years. It was a top performance by Timo (Scheider), but Martin (Tomczyk) drove superbly too. He set the agenda for the race right at the start and made no mistakes. You can only say ‘well done’ to that. It was a fantastic team result for Audi. You’re simply happy when you clinch a one-two victory.”
Ernst Moser (Team Director Audi Sport Team Phoenix): “Indescribable! Again everything worked out. As late as in the warm-up Martin (Tomczyk) had not been totally satisfied. Then we made another change. That must have been exactly what he needed. He drove incredible times. He was able to attack and overtake, which is very difficult here. After our first stop we took the lead. The rest was relatively easy. It’s like a dream. Everything has got to fit together. Today that worked out again. We’re getting better and better and more self-confident. You can tell that that’s the case. The guys are looking forward to every pit stop. That brings about success. Rahel (Frey) was having a hard time at first but in the end she was driving at a good pace. She needs these meters. You can tell that she’s making major progress. It makes me happy to see that.”
Arno Zensen (Team Director Audi Sport Team Rosberg): “First of all, ‘well done’ to Phoenix and Martin Tomczyk. Their performance is incredible. A really great race! That also goes for Timo (Scheider), who advanced to second place from a position farther at the rear. I have to say that I’m pleased as well. Filipe (Albuquerque) was strong the whole weekend and has finally scored his first point. He deserves it. Now a load has been taken off him. That’s nice for the whole team. Edo (Mortara) unfortunately had body contacts. That damaged his car. We stopped before it got too dangerous. Now both of them have finished in the points once.”
