Audi is working on liquid and gaseous e-fuels. Customers in Germany can already use Audi e-gas in combination with the A3 Sportback g-tron. Furthermore, a variety of research plants that Audi operates in collaboration with leading industry partners are already producing Audi e-diesel, e-gasoline and e-ethanol. The Audi e-fuels are a pioneering complement to electric mobility.
These projects address an old problem in search of a solution. Whenever conventional petroleum-based fuels are combusted, they release carbon dioxide and pollute the atmosphere. Ethanol and diesel from renewable raw materials such as corn and rapeseed generally achieve a better environmental balance, because the plants previously absorbed the CO2 that is released in combustion. But these fuel sources compete with arable land for growing food. As such, they cannot constitute a long-term solution for our planet’s skyrocketing population. Audi is developing innovative e-fuels as a true alternative.
