Audi México has successfully completed the ramp-up of the plant and achieved its volume target of 158,550 locally produced Audi Q5* units in the first full year after opening of the plant.
The premium SUV has already won numerous accolades, including the “Golden Steering Wheel”, a prestigious German automotive award, in the “Large SUV” category. After just one year, the newest site in the Audi production network is already one of the country’s most attractive employers – the latest ranking by Universum Global puts Audi México in fourth place, for example.
The site shows its commitment to the region by being involved in numerous local projects. Audi México already employs over 6,000 people, and this development benefits the economy of the entire region.
Last year, 85 young people started their apprenticeships at Audi México. The company currently employs 214 apprentices, with another 87 in apprenticeships under contract at Volkswagen de México. 94 apprenticeship positions are planned for 2018. 40 percent of the third class of apprentices are female. The dual education system is based on the German model and combines theory with practice. Universidad Tecnológica de Puebla (UTP) is the cooperative education partner. The new training center with 20,000 square meters (215,278 sq ft) of total floor space provides training for more than 1,500 employees each year, with 5,100 courses conducted in 2017. The training center has provided optimal conditions for outstanding employee training since its opening in October 2014.
Mexican engineering students can apply for an EMA (Estudiantes Mexicanos en Alemania – Mexican students in Germany) grant in partnership with the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service). The 52 participants from the first, second and third classes have already completed the program and taken up their positions at Audi México. The fourth class with 11 participants is currently on assignment in Germany (semester abroad with subsequent internship at AUDI AG). The fifth class kicked off in January 2018 with 10 participants.
The new Audi plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 Audi Q5* models. Audi has selected approximately 170 suppliers for the Audi Q5*. At start of production, Audi México was sourcing more than 70 percent from local added value, whereby the localization level will be increased in the medium term.
Numerous awards for the premium SUV, including the title “Best All-wheel Drive Car of 2017” from a German readers' voting confirm the quality of the Audi Q5*. It achieved the top score of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash test which makes it the benchmark in its vehicle class. The Audi Q5* also beat seven competitors for the “Golden Steering Wheel” award in the “Large SUV” category.
Audi México is focused on smart logistics. The plant is equipped with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) antennas which enable flexible coordination of production and supply chains. Audi México is the first plant in the entire Volkswagen Group to implement this technology for the entire material and container flow. The new plant was built in accordance with applicable Audi standards, including sustainability and environmental protection aspects.
The environmental protection guidelines of the plant comply with those of AUDI AG. As in the other plants of the Audi Group, a mechanical, chemical and biological process-water treatment system is being installed, for example, to make the factory wastewater neutral. The same applies to CO2‑emissions from production (CO2‑neutrality). Audi México has already planted more than 100,000 trees on 100 hectares (247 acres) in the neighboring county of San Jose Ozumba to help replenish groundwater.
The Audi Orchestra was established as part of the Esperanza Azteca Initiative in November 2015. The project focuses on children and young people from the region and comprises a choir and an orchestra with a total of 270 members. With this initiative, Audi contributes to the development of children's cognitive and manual abilities, while also promoting team spirit and developing a sense of belonging between San José Chiapa and Audi.
Audi México is also deeply involved in additional initiatives, including Girls Day, the “Verano Audi” summer camp, and numerous health programs in the region. After the earthquake in September 2017, Audi and its employees donated two million pesos to the organization TECHO to help rebuild 46 houses in the state of Puebla.
